see Kingfish have been the standout, and the bait ball action prior to Christmas was off the charts. Most fish were under the legal size of 65cm but what they lacked in size they made up for with numbers. We scaled the tackle down to 10lb outfits to help throw the small 2 and 3 inch lures they wanted to eat and to highlight the never say die fighting tactics these fish attribute. Several legal Kingfish were captured during these fast paced, high energy sessions with the best fish going to regular client Greg with his impressive 81cm fish right in front of the Opera house and Harbour bridge, a truely iconic experience!!

When the surface feeding pelagics have quietened down we have been targeting the submerged bait balls found using the ever reliable Lowrance HDS 9 sounder/fish finder and sinking our offerings to the bottom. Here we have found some great Flathead fishing with the odd Kingfish, Flounder and Bream thown in for good measure. Some standout Flathead have been caught on the light tackle with the best two coming in at 82cm and 83cm. Both big female breeders were carefully photographed and released. My hat goes off to those guys for releasing our future Flathead producers.

Since my well earned break over Christmas, the fishing has become even better! With a switch over to live baiting for the bigger Kingfish we have had some stellar days with lots of legal Kingfish gracing the decks, the best of which goes to Joe with his chunky harbour fish coming in at 93cm. Some days have seen us run out of live bait due to the voracious feeding habits of the mighty Yellowtail King leaving us feeling elated and exhausted! This great action should continue for a few months yet, so there is plenty of time to book a trip to come and experience what these awesome fish have to offer.

Amongst all of this great Kingfish and pelagic action for local and overseas clients I have been guiding some keen Bream fishers onto their PBs and firsts. They have been getting some great fish using cicada surface lures and also stick baits from our great friends at Prolure. The pinnacle of breaming is to crack the 40cm mark and several of these fish have been encountered this season on my vessel. This action will also continue for several months yet so if you’re itching to learn the finer points of fooling the wiley Bream give me a call to arrange a suitable day.

G’day guys,

Sorry for the gap in blog posts but I’ve been busy guiding, attending meetings and doing the occassional talk at clubs and tackle shops of an evening plus coping with the challenges of becoming a new dad to our awesome son Cohen Jack selby born on 31/12/16.

http://hickscountry.com/media/hayride-video-shoot-2-2/feed/ MULLOWAY MEETING

I was recently invited to attend the Mulloway recovery program meeting along side other keen stakeholders and DPI recreational fisheries managers to discuss how the recovery plan has been working/not working over the last 3-4 yrs and how these prized fish are to be managed more effectively in the future. Unfortunately conclusive evidence suggests they are in dire straights with their estimated current bio mass sitting around 7% of their estimated unfished virgin bio mass. This to me screams that we need to take imediate action on all forms of fishing for Mulloway from quantifying and observing trawler bycatch to mesh netting practices and their net set times to tighter or slot limit type bag limits and/or closures for recreational and commercial fisherman.

At times the red tape of dealing with several governmental departments and peoples lively hoods will surely get in the way and delay what really needs to happen to allow this valuable species to return to its former glory, naturally. We can all do our bit in our daily lives to ensure that the rivers and their tributaries remain healthy so that it can support the amount of fish we would all like to see thriving in our estuaries and oceans. Be it picking up some rubbish when at your local fishing spot or park to watching what you put down your drains to containing all sediment run off from a buiding site you may be working on. All of these small things we may look past on the daily have a major impact on the vunerable, fragile ecosystems most of sydney builds its ever expanding (not so) ‘affordable’ housing on and in turn when it rains it all washes into the creeks and rivers displacing and in worst case scenarios killing all the waters inhabitants from macro invertebrates to the major predatory species we humans like to target.

source site TALKS

Recently i have been invited to do some talks on lure fishing for Mulloway at local tackle shops and fishing clubs and to be honest i have been overwhelmed with the turnout at these evening talks. Some have exceeded 120 attendees and other have been capped at 100 due to lack of space to accommodate them. I’d like to extend my gratitude to the the staff at BCF West Gosford, Fishing Station at Mona Vale and Windybanks Fishing club at Hornsby for putting on such great talks. Keep an eye on our facebook page for future talk dates and locations.

<img class="size-medium wp-image-6626" src="http://www.sydneysportfishing.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/fishing-station-talk-300x225.jpg" alt="Great turn out at the Fishing Station talk.
The fishing over winter on the Hawkesbury was patchy one day and fantastic the next! Some great Mulloway have come to the net for a quick pic and release but they have been a bit thin on the ground compared to other years. I’m assuming the rain earlier in the year in early autumn has had a bit to do with the unusal patterns i have seen this winter. This will all turn around over the next few weeks as we see a definite trends towards spring with the wattle trees in my local area already in full bloom. Live baiting trips will be on the cards from around september to late november for those not keen on a big day casting and retreiving lures. Get in ealry to avoid missing out on the good tides/dates and learn how to fool Mulloway in Sydney’s busy waterways.

We experienced some fantastic blackfish/ Luderick sessions this winter with one session producing no less than 12 stud specimens over the 40cm mark with the best nudging 46cm!! I can’t stress enough how much this style of fishing helps anglers develope the fundamental elements that all fishing revolves around. A must for beginners to pick up the basics and experienced anglers to rehone and focus their skills. They will be about for another month or so if you are interested in learning this style of fishing and harvesting a nice sustainable feed of fish.

Big Blackfish like this will test your tackle and your angling skills!

Bream have come back on the bite in recent weeks after their noticible absence over winter after what i assume was an early spawn run triggered by the aforementioned autumn rain. They have been falling victim to small vibes, soft plastic grubs and creature baits. Im sure a bit of bread berley in the washes will pull a few too if lures aren’t your thing. As spring progresses some exceptional fishing will be on offer for clients wanting to learn how to effectively use soft plastics, you can expect mixed bags of bream, Estuary perch, tailor and flathead when on board a guided trip.

It’s a bit early for inshore Kingfish despite there being an extended bite that went well into the start of winter for those fishing in sydney harbour. A couple of my clients were lucky enough to get one on a soft plastic hopped down deep over a wreck in july whilst we were targeting demersal species. Anyone keen on targeting Kingfish this spring/summer i will be taking bookings for the seson starting at the beginning of November. Get in early to secure good dates and tides.

It’s not too often in business you recieve such detailed reviews from amazingly articulate clients. Below is the feedback I recieved after a 5hr half day trip on the beautiful Hawkesbury River guiding a husband, wife and son helping them learn and understand the fundamental techniques of using soft plastics. To say I was shocked is an understatement, that I could have such an impact in such a short period of time, really put some perspective on what I do for a “JOB”. Reading this for the first time via email brought a tear to my eye and has made me realise how lucky I really am to be “living the dream”. Please read on as Paul details his time spent with us this past September…

Choosing Sydney Sportfishing Adventures to be our guide/instructor on the Hawkesbury River has turned out to be the best decision and investment I have ever made when planning a holiday.

From the beginning via email, Dan Selby was prompt, accommodating and friendly. I could tell immediately that my family and I would be receiving much more than the average fishing charter. Dan listened to my requests and customised a fishing adventure to match.

After a friendly meet and greet, my wife Tam, my teenage son Alex and I boarded Dan’s comfortable, fast boat. We arrived shortly at a beautiful, classic Hawkesbury River sandstone cliff. We started learning right away, with expert tips explained and demonstrated by Dan in easy to follow steps. He identified issues with my cast and retrieve technique, and helped me to correct past habits at every cast. Indeed, he was also very encouraging when we all followed through with his instructions. This was important to me as I wanted my son to learn and be rewarded with positive language from a professional instructor.

We moved from one stunning location to the next, and at each Dan identified and relayed his knowledge on the lifestyle of the resident birdlife, such as: Wedge-tailed Eagles, Sea Eagles and Cormorants. We were fortunate enough to witness eagles battling for territory.

At each spot Dan helped us to refine our technique with soft-plastics cast and retrieve. It was only a matter of time before the first fish was landed by my son Alex; and we all cheered. Not long after I pulled in a 49cm flathead, and then another in the high 30’s. Alex followed the trend again with another flatty at 43cm. At each and every step, Dan provided clear instructions to ensure the strikes were converted to catches. We kept the three flathead in the well on Dan’s boat, and he said he would show us how to fillet them when we return.

At one location – while Dan was explaining tide currents and eddies – he spotted a “bust-up” and instructed us all to target that area. Our casting had already become more accurate by this stage (just two hours into the adventure), but best of all was Tam’s cast when she placed her lure right at the rock-wall, and into the frenzy of baitfish. As Dan was explaining the nature of the hunter and the hunted, Tam’s rod bent, and so Dan instructed her to wind, wind, wind. It was all very exciting when my wife landed a 40cm tailor.

In the final hour we moved to another location where Dan pointed out some caves that contained some indigenous markings. We discussed and theorised what it must have been like for them when tall ships sailed up the river. We hooked a few smaller fish here, but then just before it was time to go, my rod bent over and it was difficult to hold on. The strain on this fish was more than I have experienced before, and with Dan’s advice I moved around the boat, letting the fish run a few times. Then lifting and winding and lifting and winding when possible, I eventually landed a 50cm Australian Salmon. I know that’s not huge, but my goodness they do have some fight in them. It was thrilling!

Paul’s 50cm Australian Salmon

On return, as promised Dan showed us how to fillet flathead. While doing so he also explained the anatomy of the Dusky Flathead: from its teeth and shape of its mouth, to its organs and even the contents of its stomach. This was clearly knowledge gained from many years of experience and study.

For me the most impressive factor about our fishing adventure was witnessing the way that Dan Selby uses all of his senses at once. He is aware of the status of all three passengers in his boat at all times. He was acutely aware of the position of my finger on my line before casting, and the angle of Tam’s rod, and the length of leader on Alex’ rod, and the distance of the boat from the rocks, and the position of the sun relative to the cliffs, and the wind direction, the tide, the current, when to duck, the location of baitfish, the drop-off, the presentation of the lure . . . and so much more; all at once. Somehow he does all of this and also mixes in some jokes and banter. From one trainer to another – that’s seriously impressive Dan.

I am now booking my next boating holiday, and it will definitely include another day on the river with Sydney Sportfishing Adventures and Dan Selby.

On behalf of Tam and Alex, thanks again for a truly brilliant experience.

Sincerely,

Paul – Software Trainer (now Soft-Plastics Enthusiast)

Hi Guys,

It’s been a while between blogs, sorry for that ive been busy guiding, in between the windy, wet weather patterns we have experienced over winter and also moving house to Spencer on the banks of the Hawkesbury river, It’s been nothing short of challenging but the result is a more convenient location for my line of work, with the biggest bennefit cutting the daily commute to around half an hour each way when doing Hawkesbury trips from Autumn through to Spring targeting Mulloway with you guys.

<img class="size-medium wp-image-6492" src="http://www.sydneysportfishing.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/fisihng-guide-hawkesbury-river-300x237.jpg" alt="Persistance mixed with good techniques and an experienced guide can be the difference between catching or not. Mark with his PB on the very last cast!

<img class="size-medium wp-image-6490" src="http://www.sydneysportfishing.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/sydney-jewfish-on-lures-300x200.jpg" alt="Tom White with the biggest Mulloway on soft plastic on my vessel from this past winter. An impressive fish at 118cm released after a few pics.

Fishing was red hot leading into winter and continued after the decent fresh we got in June. The weather was the biggest factor this winter past as low after low battered the east coast bringing plenty of wind and rain and reducing our days on the water due to post ponements. Hopefully it’s out of the way now and we can get stuck back into some sensational spring and summer sessions.

The end of Autumn was very kind to us with plenty of meter plus Mulloway!

I will still be guiding on Sydney harbour throughout the warmer months when the Kingfish and other pelagic species like Salmon, Tailor and Bonito are having a feeding frenzy on the abundant bait the harbour houses each season. On a daily basis it can pay to be quite flexible with target species and techniques when all this surface feeding action starts to happen, this is great for you guys as it keeps things interesting. I like to employ micro jigs, spoons, soft plastics, poppers or stick baits to find out what is working on the day, this is a great way for clients to learn a variety of lure retrievs in a short period of time as we switch techniques to find which is working best for that species of fish we have encountered.

The end result of spinning lures on light tackle in Sydney harbour.where else in the World….?

Alternately a much more releaxed approach to targeting Kingfish this spring will be live baiting either Squid or Yakkas on the down rigger around prominent structures, they are perfect tours for kids through to grandparents and you generally get to see a great deal of the harbour and it’s sights as we hunt around for our quarry the mighty Yellowtail Kingfish!

Kingfish fish hard look stunning and taste great cooked or served as sashimi.

Finally, I’m in the design process of uprading my vessel ‘Me & Jew’ to a new internal layout including a center console. It’s well overdue and a welcome addition, it will transform the access around the whole cockpit, freeing up the back portion of the deck where the current pedistal seats are thus allowing the easy use of both down riggers this coming summer when targeting kings and access to the rear rod holders when live baiting Mulloway and the big hook up comes along. You guys will be the big benneficiaries here with the unimpeded deck space to tame that fish of a life time! Stay tuned for the next blog when this will be all finalised, finished and functional.

G’day guys,

The start of Autumn really turned on some great fishing for my clients with plenty of good sized fish and a range of species from Bream, Jewfish/ Mulloway, Bass, Flathead, Tailor, Salmon and Kingfish. However there were a few notable captures…

Donna and husband Adrian joined me on march 5th for a shot at some early season Mulloway. We started early and were rewarded with a neat 66cm school Jewfish first up. Then followed a bit of a slow patch where we managed no fish! I pulled up stumps and moved to a new location as the tide was getting a away from us.

Within 15 minutes of putting a spread of baits out in our new location we had a great run on the light 15lb outfit. The little 4000 Shimano rarenium was screaming in protest as it lost a large proportion of its spool of line in the blink of an eye! Adrian was on strike and jumped to the challenge and did a great job to maintain tension on this river monster throughout its powerful runs and bone jarring head shakes( which Mulloway are renowned for). Donna helped me clear the remaining rods and I quickly pulled the anchor and gave chase, which by the way, was not just in a nice open peice of water… the fish lead us on a merry excursion between a moored vessel and the bank covered with jetties and pontoons then slotted between another mooring and the one we had just avoided before we were able to lead the fish into open water where we could relax just a little from that hair raising experience. The fight went on for est, 15- 20 min before we got our first glimse of this monster.

We all gasped in shock as the real size of this fish became apparent to us, I opted to put the large environet away as this fish was never going to fit in what now looked like a bait net! I instead, went for my trusty lip grips and got a great bottom jaw grip first attempt and quickly slid my other hand up under the gill plate to secure Adrian’s new PB fish of a lifetime. After a quick discusion of whether we keep or release the fish, I promptly hauled the beast over the gunnels and onto the cockpit floor where we all took stock of the enormity of this fish. High fives, hand shakes and looks of disbelief were all shared between us in that moment on a busy saturday. It now stands as the second largest fish captured on my aptly named vessel ‘Me & Jew’ at a total length of 140cm and est 28-30kg! A day I will never forget and im sure I can say the same for Donna and Adrian. Please enjoy a few shots of that fish of a lifetime…..

I just had to get in a shot with the angler and fish.

The other notable capture came a week after this awesome experience on the following saturday March 12th, when I was joined by Chris and his two sons Brady (11 y/o) and Declan (15 y/o) who had travelled from Tasmania to fish with me on Sydney Harbour to tangle with their first ever Kingfish. The day before had seen two clients get busted up by some truly large Kingfish whilst casting poppers at structure on resonably light (15lb) tackle. So this particular day I went loaded for bear and with a different strategy up my sleeve to see if we could land one of these Harbour Hoodlums. We spent the first hour of light gathering a tank of live squid from the harbour foreshores and then put our baits to work.

Our first few spots didn’t see any action to my surprise so we headed straight to the site of destruction from the previous day. My aim was to get the young guys onto some managable sized fish to get them used to the drag pressures and the fighting ability of the Kingfish. A spanner was thown into the works when I pitched a large fresh squid head under a marker bouy and handed the rod to Declan with the reel in free spool. Moments later Declan mentioned line was being pulled from the spool so I suggested to close the bail arm and get ready, seconds later he was jolted into action as the fish went for cover and I began motoring off in an attempt to lead the fish from its lair. The technique worked but the fish seemed to be much larger than anticipated! Around 10 tense minutes later we were laying our eyes on a true inshore monster Kingfish from Australias biggest and busiest harbour! Declan’s first Kngfish encounter and his largest fish to date measured in at an impressive 114cm and was released to live another day.

As winter approaches there is still some amazing fishing to be had here in sydney and the Hawkesbury river. There is usually a great kingfish bite that extends up til the month of June and Hawkesbury charters were you can experience the crazy Mulloway, Flathead and big blue nosed Bream on soft plastic lures that have many clients coming back season after season to get their next fix of big fish on light spin tackle so rug up and come join me for some HOT winter action!
Before this rain turned the whole system brown we were experiencing some great bream on surface lures on the flats using poppers and walk the dog style stick baits. There was also a good bite on cicada eating bream with some nice fish to 40cm plus coming to the net and a few of unstoppable proportions that won their freedom in tight snag ridden country.

The odd flathead is partial to well presented surface lure worked across the shallow flats.

Sydney harbour was a great playground leading up to the new year with the big surface feeding schools of Autralian salmon, kingfish, bonito and tailor devouring the micro bait most mornings. Light spin tackle and a selection of lures in differing profiles is the key to consistency. The highlight being that you didnt know which species you were going to hook next as they all fed together within sight of the world famous Sydney Harbour Bridge, I really need to pinch myself daily to remind myself how lucky i am to have this fishery as my office.

Aussie Salmon are a tough adversary, taking large powerful runs then run straight back at the angler and leaping into the air to throw the hooks.

Most Kingfish we have encountered this season have been on lures and some nice fish into the high seventies have been landed with a few getting away that will give you nightmares. It’s been a trade off between fishing light enough to get a bite and heavy enough to stop that fish of a lifetime. I carry a wide selection of Shimano gear on board to try and have the most appropriate for the situation at hand on any given day.

Big kingfish on light spin tackle are great sport in Sydney’s estuaries.

Some terrific Mulloway were captured leading up to December with some sessions yeilding 10 or more fish to just under a meter in length on live baits and lures. I start targeting Jewfish from March through to next spring so if you are looking to expand your knowledge on this species and have a chance at encountering some sensational Mulloway fishing on Sydney’s doorstep get in early to secure the better dates/tides.

Lure casting and live baiting are both effective techniques to master to catch quality jewfish like this.

All in all its shaping up to be a great end of summer and start of autumn especially with the recent fresh which will reinvigorate all manner of species and add much needed nutrients to the waterways. Species you will likely encounter on an upcoming charter include: Estuary perch, Kingfish, Mulloway, Bream, Flathead, Salmon, Bonito, Frigate mackeral, mack tuna, tailor and squid.

Mulloway continued to bite well with an average of 7-8 soapy and school Jewfish a day plus other missed opportunies, some lucky clients were fortunate in getting fish better than a meter in length to the waiting net using very light tackle and lures.

Some impressive Mulloway have been caught on lures and bait in recent weeks.

Meter plus Mulloway are an impressive capture in Sydney’s waterways.

One notable hook up occurred for regular client Brett, where the fight went for 4 hrs and 10 min before the light 10lb leader finally wore through. Brett did a bloody great job staying patient and calm while trying to wear a fish out that seemed to be of monumental proportions compared to the light spinning tackle with 8lb main line and 10lb leader. The gear was a 2500 Shimano Rarenium and a 3-6 kg Raider soft plastic rod from Shimano also, lure was a 4in PaddlerZ by Zman in AYU colour. I’m sure it’s these moments that help keep the fire burning inside you, to make you more hungry for that next opportunity to capture that fish of your dreams. We will try harder next time mate…

Brett putting the hurt on an unstoppable river monster…approx 3 hr mark!

Some nice bream have fallen for well presented softp plastics ,harbodies/ poppers and a few on live baits aimed at Mulloway. Accurate casts and subtle presentations will get you the better fish these days in Sydney, use of live baits like nippers, crabs and worms are worth the effort and usually garentee you will get a result.

The Hawkesbury river is home to some massive Bream.

Quite a few big Dusky Flathead have shown up this season with the best fish going 84cm on a soft plastic for Peter on the Hawkesbury R. This fish was captured not long after the hooks came free out of a suspected Mulloway. Remaining calm and focussed plus making sure you are employing good technique throughout every retrieve will fool quality fish like this on a regular basis.

Peter looking suitably impressed with his PB Dusky Flathead on a soft plastic lure.

Kingfish have been fussy one day and keen to hit most things the next, which is not uncommon for this species. The best fish so far fell to young 12 y/o Louis with a healthy 84cm specimen caught down rigging live squid with myself and his Dad in Pittwater. Plenty of other legal fish and a few that we will never know how big they were, are lurking about in Sydney’s inshore water as i type. They will be on the bite through to the start of next winter (2016) so there will be ample opportunities to get out on the water with me to try your luck on Sydney’s strongest fighting and not to mention best eating fish, the Yellowtail Kingfish.

12 y/o Louis with his impressive Kingfish from Pittwater.

This will only get better over the next 5 months as the water temps continue to rise and make conditions more favourable for the fish and us anglers.

Quality Kingfish like this move into sydney’s inshore waters over the summer months.

During a morning charter you can learn the basics of finding/ catching live squid and yakkas(baitfish) plus rigging them up correctly, How to down rig live and dead baits, where to locate kingfish/ fish behaviour, lure fishing techniques, What lures/ jigs and where to use them, casting techniques and acuracy, how to use your sounder/ fish finder.

They fight HARD and taste GREAT!

These fish are one of the toughest opponents once hooked and will test everything you have from your boat handling skills to the angler themselves and their ability to handle the strong drag pressures and reasonably heavy spin tackle needed to extract a big angry Kingy away from its structure, be it a wreck, a marker bouy or your own boat!

I have helped many clients achieve their goals of learning the fundamentals for capturing their first Sydney Kingfish or that new PB with some impressive inshore Kingfish. I’m blessed to have encountered some great battles in Sydney harbour and Pittwater with clients regularly getting blown away and reefed by unstoppable fish but also landing some top catches up to 118cm and 13kg.

Hi Guys and Girls,

I had a wonderful surprise recently when one of my pictures shot by good mate Matt Brown turned up on the front cover of NSW Fishing Monthly Magazine, Sept 2015. I have been writing/contributing monthly location articles and the odd feature to this great publication for over 6 yrs now and and lucky to have been on their cover several times previously.

The 40cm plus Bream i’m holding took a liking to a 5in Z-man soft plastic/ TT’s jighead combo aimed at the Hawkesbury’s elusive Mulloway population. We tend to get a lot of by-catch of big Bream when using larger lures for Mulloway which is great for clients as they break up the day.

Dan Selby displaying a big bream

The lure fishing for Mulloway will be coming to an end through spring when live baiting will be a better proposition to get a better size of fish and keep us fishing throughout the whole day. On these charters clients can learn how to catch squid, herring, yakkas, tailor or pike, depending on what is prevalent, then how to rig them up to successfully target Mulloway on the Mighty Hawkesbury.

We will also be starting to target the mighty Yellow Tail Kingfish on Sydney harbour and Pittwater using lures and live baits. Want to catch your first one? or Refine your current techniques? I can help you achieve your goals of being a more successful angler everytime you hit the water! Come and see what all the fuss is about with these hard fighting, great looking and fantastic tasting inshore sportfish, Call 0405 196 253 or drop me and email via our contacts page.

Yellow Tail Kingfish fight hard, look good and taste great!!

Don’t forget our 2.5 hr Fishin’ Tuition classes are held most Sundays from Berowra boat ramp at 7am, 10am and 1pm. Price is $100 p/p based on a full booking of 3 people. Personal, private, educational on water tuition teaching the fundamentals of cast and retrieve soft plastic lure techniques in calm water.

Thanks for taking the time to read, I look forward to getting on the water with many of you guys in the near future.

Regards

Dan Selby.

Targeting EPs can be action packed with cricket score catches achieved when active schools are located. They are great for honing your soft plastic retrieves and bite detection.
