What a great spring it’s been guiding client’s on both Sydney harbour and the Hawkesbury fishing charters. Plenty of co-operative fish and lovely weather, most days, has seen some impressive captures from both of these systems. Bream on surface poppers, Bass on spinner baits, Mulloway on soft plastic lures and live baits, Kingfish on live baits, Flathead on soft plastics plus tailor and salmon on surface poppers are just a few of the many options Sydney and the mighty Hawkesbury can throw up at this time of year.
Mulloway continued to bite well with an average of 7-8 soapy and school Jewfish a day plus other missed opportunies, some lucky clients were fortunate in getting fish better than a meter in length to the waiting net using very light tackle and lures.
One notable hook up occurred for regular client Brett, where the fight went for 4 hrs and 10 min before the light 10lb leader finally wore through. Brett did a bloody great job staying patient and calm while trying to wear a fish out that seemed to be of monumental proportions compared to the light spinning tackle with 8lb main line and 10lb leader. The gear was a 2500 Shimano Rarenium and a 3-6 kg Raider soft plastic rod from Shimano also, lure was a 4in PaddlerZ by Zman in AYU colour. I’m sure it’s these moments that help keep the fire burning inside you, to make you more hungry for that next opportunity to capture that fish of your dreams. We will try harder next time mate…
Some nice bream have fallen for well presented softp plastics ,harbodies/ poppers and a few on live baits aimed at Mulloway. Accurate casts and subtle presentations will get you the better fish these days in Sydney, use of live baits like nippers, crabs and worms are worth the effort and usually garentee you will get a result.
Quite a few big Dusky Flathead have shown up this season with the best fish going 84cm on a soft plastic for Peter on the Hawkesbury R. This fish was captured not long after the hooks came free out of a suspected Mulloway. Remaining calm and focussed plus making sure you are employing good technique throughout every retrieve will fool quality fish like this on a regular basis.
Kingfish have been fussy one day and keen to hit most things the next, which is not uncommon for this species. The best fish so far fell to young 12 y/o Louis with a healthy 84cm specimen caught down rigging live squid with myself and his Dad in Pittwater. Plenty of other legal fish and a few that we will never know how big they were, are lurking about in Sydney’s inshore water as i type. They will be on the bite through to the start of next winter (2016) so there will be ample opportunities to get out on the water with me to try your luck on Sydney’s strongest fighting and not to mention best eating fish, the Yellowtail Kingfish.
